Counting oval cost of wet weather
The Bunyip spoke to the nine
A grade coaches from around the
league to get their take on which
are the best and worst surfaces their
teams have played on in BL&G
this season during the rainy weeks,
and which, currently, would be the
best for the grand final.
"It's hard to say, because early
on it was really nice and Willaston
would've been the best we played on
but, obviously, we played them in
round one when all the grounds are
all good."WORST: Freeling
"Freeling would have to be the
worst oval we've played on this year.
It stinks. It's horrendous, it's just like
real, thick sludge."
"I'd say for footy purposes, it
would have to be Willaston.
If you're talking about including
netball in regards to that, and the
ground was all-okay, I'd say Nuri
would be the best spot to have the
Coach: Roger James
"Willaston usually holds up not
too bad. We played Nuri on the
weekend and that oval was pretty
good, I couldn't fault it."
"Everyone's going to struggle with
what the oval conditions are like,
considering what we've had rain-
GRAND FINAL: Nuriootpa
"I'd probably go Nuri; you
wouldn't even know you've had so
much rain. It was in pretty good
nick. But saying that, I haven't seen
Willaston and a few other grounds
as well." Freeling
Coach: Beau Jarman
BEST: South Gawler and
"Both Gawler ovals are both pret-
ty decent, not including Willaston
now, that's pretty average, but the
South Gawler and Gawler Central
ovals are pretty good."
"Ours got to a pretty bad state
where it just couldn't soak up any
more water, and it was just mud.
The whole thing was mud there for
GRAND FINAL: South Gawler
"You can even see it going over the
bypass there, it looks pretty bloody
Coach: Damien Herzick
BEST: Gawler Central
"We were lucky because we didn't
play on it for four weeks. When that
heavy rain came we never played a
game on it. The assistant coach said
to me 'it must be the only ground
in the league that needs watering
now'." WORST: Freeling
"Last game the whole ground was
mud; thick, heavy stuff. We've got
to play the second-semi there so it's
going to be interesting to see how it
GRAND FINAL: Gawler Central
"From what I've seen it's definitely
in the best condition. I think Wil-
laston is really good, Nuri as well."
"Given the conditions, Nuri was
pretty good when we played there a
few weeks ago, given all the rain they
had and the traffic that has been on
"We haven't had to play at Ta-
nunda yet, but Williamstown was
pretty hard in the wet. That's always
a challenging oval in the middle of
GRAND FINAL: Undecided
"I think when it gets wet, you
can't do too much about it. Ovals
get muddy when you have a real wet
winter and that's what we've got."
"Through that six or seven weeks
of ridiculous weather, Gawler Cen-
tral's ground was the best, apart
from one little corner. The rest of it
was really good."
WORST: Freeling and Tanunda
"Freeling was pretty bad the day
we were there."
GRAND FINAL: Nuriootpa
"After a couple of days of dry
weather it's immaculate now.
Last Tuesday night our ground was
immaculate, they'd rolled it and had
all the outfield back to its best."
Coach: Scott Lee
BEST: South Gawler
"Our ground at the moment is
in the best condition in the whole
league...compared to the grounds
we've played on in the last few
WORST: Williamstown, Tanunda
"We haven't seen Freeling for a
while so I don't know what that's
like, but when we played on Nuri
halfway through the year it was
GRAND FINAL: South Gawler
"As far as ground surface and con-
dition, I think ours is in the best
They were talking about if it's not
going to be at Tanunda, it's going to
be at Kapunda.
We played at Kapunda and it's not
Coach: Mathew Booth
"At the moment, I'd say the best
one we've probably played on since
it's been wet is Willaston, it's actu-
ally held up quite well, but we're yet
to play at South and Angaston."
"Having to front up on it every
second week has given us some grief,
the boys obviously end up with very,
very heavy legs, week in, week out."
GRAND FINAL: Tanunda
"Just having a week of sunshine
has made an absolute amazing
amount of difference. This week
we've actually reseeded and rolled
it, so it's actually quite flat and in
pretty good nick."
Coach: Steve O'Connor
"It's the best surface in the comp;
if you came out here tonight and
took a picture it's back to the March/
"One side of Williamstown wasn't
too flash, and that's probably the
worst we've played on. But only one
side, I want to stress that, the other
side was pretty good."
GRAND FINAL: Willaston
"If there's an oval not up to scratch,
I think we should move it, because
it is a promotion. A lot of people
come and watch the Barossa league
grand final, even though they're not
