GOLF: The Marty Dew stableford competition last
Saturday saw numbers back up above 70, with 60
Scoring was, obviously, pretty easy on the day
with half the field scoring 36 points or better, a
remarkable feat, really.
A couple of great scores were handed in with
none better than Tony Holding's 47.
Another fantastic round was carded by Ian Clarke
with 45 points.
He won the A grade ahead of Derek Baird on 39
and a host of others on 38.
Jayden Higgins continues his great form after his
comeback and Martin Hayward, Damien Burgess,
Archy and Bert Pearce would all be feeling pretty
good with that score.
Joe Ryan and Andy Peters battled it out for the B
grade with 40 points each.
The veteran came up trumps in the countback.
Brothers Jim and Mick Menzel and Bob Lambert
also finished on the magical 38 points.
The C grade also came down to a countback, also
on 40 points, with Mario Sicilano, 'Sir' Don Kaesler
and Stephen D. Waters at the top of the field.
Mario led the trio in the countback.
Twelve fillies ventured out and again a
countback was required to separate Jeanette
Venhoek and Marianne Daniel, with the former
Andrew Hayward was a newcomer who is lining
up his three cards and after the first will begin

As mentioned, it was the final of the pennants
last week and I believe the Barossa team was
triumphant in division one over Gawler.
Thursday's field was also an improved number
and Jayden Higgins made the most of his spare
time, knocking up 41 points to narrowly beat Trevor
Bateman to the voucher.
Jayden is back to hitting the ball long and straight
after a bit of a layoff.
The stormy weather did not deter the keen
twilight crew and it ended up being Trish Sweet's
maiden competition victory with her 20 points
being hard-earned in the rain, thunder and
This Thursday is the annual Ham and Turkey Day
with Greg Jones and Milton Martin putting up
plenty of prizes in the popular stableford round.
On Saturday vice-captain Dave Carson is putting
up the prize in the par comp.
TENNIS: Gawler Mavericks need just a victory in
tomorrow's Playford Invitational Night Tennis grand
final against The Grove to win the premiership
With the minor premiership already wrapped up,
the Mavericks did not miss a beat in handing Trinity
a 5-0 defeat.
Stephen Drury and Shane Adams have proved a
formidable combination this season, and against
Trinity were at their best, with a 30-20 doubles win,
followed by four singles successes.
And if Gawler was not already raging favourite,
tomorrow's opponent, The Grove, lost 4-1 to
Playford, which is not the best warm-up for the big
In the final clash, Elizabeth surprised with a 4-1
win over Gulfview Heights, in what has been a solid
season for both teams.
Games are played at the Bicentennial Courts,
Elizabeth Vale, 7pm on Thursdays.
The two-person teams play two singles each and
a doubles, with matches decided by the first to 30
points, with at least a two-point advantage.
BOWLS: Although the annual game against
Northern was cancelled, the Lower North Past
President's Bowls Association branch held a
social game at Clare on Monday.
About 40 members were welcomed to Clare
by Ron Wurst, who handed the club facilities to
the association for the day.
Between two games, the club provided an
excellent lunch, which ensured all enjoyed a
President Margaret Gameau drew cards for prizes,
which were won by Ray Atkinson (Snowtown),
Brian Eime (Blyth), Neville Nolan (Nuriootpa) and
Bill Boyd (Gawler). Ian McFarlane (Freeling) won
the raffle, with many others winning special prizes
to complement their Christmas festivities.
The next game will be versus Yorke Peninsula
at Port Vincent on January 19.
Any bowler who has been a club or association
president is eligible to be nominated for
membership by contacting secretary John Tayler
(8528 5306) or any member.

On target for 100
YOUNG greyhound trainer Ben
Rawlings' aim for this year was to better
his 2013 training record and achieve a
personal goal of 100 winners in a season.
With work still progressing on the Gawler
facility, racing is being conducted at Angle
Park, so achieving his aim now rests on the
few remaining meetings for the year.
Last year Rawlings trained 95 winners, in-
cluding some in non-TAB races.
Having got so near the century mark last
year, he decided to set a goal of 100 TAB win-
ners this season.
After an average start, the return of some
of his best runners saw things begin to im-
Rawlings has a team of 16 racing dogs
-- enough of which are available, with several
meetings remaining, to achieve his target.
At the Tuesday meeting, Rawlings took out
the training honours for the day, scoring a
treble, which brought his tally to 93 for the
His first winner was Bogie Hero, followed
by Dr Kiaralee and Phil De Magic.
Phil De Magic won by just over a length
in an excellent time of 22.39 seconds, taking
his record to six wins and places from just 16
The Dusty Dollars Syndicate, managed by
Phil Emrose, owns Phil De Magic.
As the syndicate members all work at the
Moomba oilfields, they rarely get to the track,
but despite their remoteness they would have
been following the dog's exploits.
Coming from a line of experienced
greyhound trainers, which stretches back
to his grandparents, Rawlings is a full-time
Amongst his many winners, Rawlings
named one of his biggest wins as Bogie
Magic, in the 2013 Gawler Gold Cup.
Very keen on sport, Rawlings plans to trav-
el to the United States next year and attend as
many sport events as possible, which might
include a look at their greyhound racing.
While this absence might make it hard to
surpass this year's tally, Rawlings is sure to
bounce back and get amongst the winners
A definite date for a return to racing at
Gawler has not yet been released, but is likely
to be in early February.
