"They felt that I was a good leader...and I
was just very chuffed about the support."
During his final months in the role,
Mr Sambell said he will be urging the
community to get involved in the Novem-
ber local government elections.
Mr Sambell would not reveal his pick for
mayor but indicated there are "a couple" of
current elected members who may consider
contesting the role.
Currently Gawler lawyer John Bolton
is the only resident to indicate interest in
standing for the position.
Mr Sambell said he would back the
successful nominee and elected members
"100 per cent".
"I think that's the most important part, I
don't want to see any councillors or mayor
stand for the position unless their heart is
really in the town," he said.
"They've got to have love for the town,
they've got to have thought for the town
and they've certainly got to be able to make
the right decisions."
Mr Sambell was elected mayor in 2006
and is expected to serve out his term until a
new mayor is elected in November.
In his two terms as mayor, Mr Sambell
said council had faced and overcome ma-
jor challenges, including turning around its
$3-million deficit into an expected surplus.
"We're now in credit, some hundred
thousand dollars, we've achieved that
milestone," he said.
Gawler Council chief executive Henry
Inat said it has been a difficult decision for
"He's made a lot of contributions to the
local community," Mr Inat said.
"He's a local identity and I'm sure all of
the council staff will miss dealing with him
on a regular basis."
Following his retirement from the may-
oralty, Mr Sambell will be returning to
operating charter tours with small groups of
