FOR someone who has only been swimming
competitively for just over two-and-a-half
years, Playford Aquatic Club’s Thomas Wotton
has come a long way.
Wotton’s pet stroke is butterfly and he is the cur-
rent holder of the 15-year-old and 16-year-old state
records in the 50m fly.
He is also ranked in the top five in Australia over
50, 100 and 200 metres.
He has already qualified for next April’s Austra-
lian Age and Australian Open Championships, the
latter of which is the 2014 Commonwealth Games
Impressive stuff, but even better when you take
into account that Wotton is operating at 30 per cent
less lung capacity than his peers.
He has something known as a respiratory ring,
which restricts his oxygen intake, and is having sur-
gery this week to fix the issue.
It will keep him out of action for up to three
months but the 16-year-old is staying positive about
“I will be able to start swimming gently about six
weeks after and I will go from there,” Wotton said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how I go after-
wards because most people think I’m going to go
“I am hoping to be able to push myself a bit fur-
If he approaches his recovery like he does his
training, there is no doubt Wotton will be
back bigger and better than ever, but
even then he may not make the big
meets in April.
“I’m not sure yet, we will just
have to see what happens,” Wotton
“Even if I do go to the opens, it will be
more for the experience at this stage.”

Redlegs land Vaneveld
FREELING has signed former Mod-
bury and Broadview division one
amateur league player Joel Vaneveld.
Vaneveld was a member of the SAAFL
team of the year when playing for Modbury
in 2009 and switched to Broadview for the
2011 and 2012 seasons.
He spent last year travelling and comes to
the Redlegs as a two-point player as a result
of his season out of the game.
The 180cm forward/midfielder was
drawn to the club by the lure of playing
with a couple of lifelong mates.
“I’m best mates with Beau Jarman and
Scott Williams,” Vaneveld said.
“We have played footy together since we
Freeling’s pre-season kicked off last week
and the 26-year-old has liked what he has
seen of the club so far.
“They are a good group of lads,” Vaneveld
“I’m pretty keen.”
The Redlegs lost key forward Matt Ste-
phen, who has gone travelling, but are
hopeful of recruiting another player or
two to complement their developing
They have been gradually improving over
the past three seasons and are hoping to
make further progress in 2014.
“We are pretty positive,” Freeling football
director David Heinrich said.
“We think that if we can get our best team
on the park we can beat anyone.
“We have a good group of under 17s
coming up from last year as well.”
Former SAAFL team of the year member Joel Vaneveld
has signed to play with Freeling for the 2014 season.
Playford Aquatic Club’s Thomas
Wotton holds two state butterfly
records and is hoping to one day
compete in the Olympics.
