Home' The Bunyip : Wednesday 27th November, 2013 Contents SOME of the latest outdoor
water features are strikingly
modern and bold, while
others are natural and blend with
the surrounding landscape.
Local landscaper Graham Hazel
(Gardens by Graham & Co) said
water features add an extra
experience to the garden.
"They provide a different element
in the garden, more ornamental
than practical, " he said.
"It just makes sitting out in the
garden that much nicer. "
The main choices when it
comes to water features include
wall-mounted water features;
freestanding, such as a spilling
urn; cascading fountains; or a
pond filled with water plants.
"You only have to go to garden
centres and you can see the
variety of them out there,"
Just a few weeks ago, Graham
completed a rock-pool-like water
feature for a client in Sampson
The feature included a waterfall
cascading into a pond, filled with
"I like the natural look and I like
flowing lines, " Mr Hazel said.
"I think, essentially, the residential
house block is usually rectangular
and the houses are usually
rectangular with sharp angles
and lines and, I think, out in the
garden it's nice to soften it up with
some flowing lines and curves."
The basic design of a water
feature usually requires the use of
a water pump.
A pump is required when the
feature has moving water, or in
the case of a pond, to keep the
water from becoming stagnant.
Andrew Lawlor, of Newtons
Building & Landscape Supplies,
said there are various pumps
available, with the right one
dependent on the type of water
"Say if a pump has to pump five
metres up, you are probably going
to be needing something with
a proper 240 volt power and if
it's only pushing up two to three
metres, you can use low voltage, "
Pump flow rates vary from about
700 to 35,000 litres per hour.
The required rate depends on
the water feature effect - is it a
waterfall effect, a slow trickling
effect or is it pumping out a sheer
"You need to know how many
litres does your pond or water
feature hold; the head it's
pumping too - is it a metre or
two metres high from where the
bottom of the pump is? What it's
doing -- is it trickling out? and then
the size of the pipe as well, "
