Local lads take
on tennis royalty
TWO local boys have taken
up the chance to go toe to
toe with the greatest doubles
pairing in tennis history after
Bob and Mike Bryan -- better
known as the Bryan Brothers
-- made a special appearance
at the Playford Tennis Centre
over the weekend.
Gawler resident Bryan Dick-
son, 10, and Craigmore teen-
ager Braiden Nguyen, 13, took
to the court on Sunday and hit
a few balls with the 16-time
Grand Slam doubles champi-
ons as part of the WTC City of
Playford Kids Tennis Day.
The American-born Bryan
Brothers have jointly held the
world number-one doubles
ranking for a record 438 weeks
over the course of their career,
which included a record-set-
ting 139 consecutive-week run
at the top.
Bryan Dickson said he and
Braiden fared well in their
short clash with the former
Olympic gold medallists, and
he was excited to be given the
opportunity to meet them.
"It was really, really fun," he
"They only beat us by one
Braiden's mother, Tracey,
said she was thrilled for the
boys to have a hit with some of
the sport's best-ever players.
"I think it's great for the kids
to be able to see the profes-
sionals up close, and it's also
great that the professionals put
the time in with the kids," she
The tennis superstars were
excited to be in the local area
to spend time with kids, and
hoped their appearance can
help boost tennis numbers in
the northern region.
"You learn a lot of life les-
sons in tennis, you learn how
to handle wins and losses, but
you also learn the values of
hard work, commitment and
dedication," Mike said.
"If kids can pick up a rac-
quet, learn to love the game
and then come back for more,
that's exactly what we're try-
ing to do."
Bob said the benefits of
young kids being active and
playing tennis can have a pos-
itive impact on their physical
well-being through all periods
of their lives.
"It's a fun sport, it's a
healthy sport, it gets you out-
side, it gets you active," he
"You can play it with your
friends -- boys or girls -- you
can play with your parents and
it's a sport you can play forev-
"It's not a sport you're going
to quit when you're 15, you
could play until you're in your
80s or 90s if you wanted.
"When we were growing
up, in southern California, we
weren't thinking about money
or trophies, we were just think-
ing about having fun and play-
ing with our friends."
