Locals’ linked-in lady
RECOGNISED for developing a novel way to connect locals
up to employment opportunities, Lewiston's Karen Simmons
is Adelaide Plains' Australia Day Citizen of the Year for
The humble recipient was "very surprised" when she found out
about her award win last month, but said she was very honoured,
"It was a bit of a shock, I didn't even know that I had been
nominated until the CEO rang me," she said.
"I actually thought it was a hoax call and I was like, 'are you for
"I am really honoured to even be nominated, let alone awarded
and actually win it."
Ms Simmons' nomination was attributed to her online volunteer
work, which involved creating a job advertisement Facebook
page that has resulted in locals finding employment.
Shortly after launching the group, titled 'Northern Adelaide
Employment Opportunities and Surrounds', Miss Simmons was
inundated with constant requests to join the page, which sparked
the idea of opening the group up to all local job seekers.
The page has now grown to contain over 18,000 followers.
"I used to work in disability employment services as a case
manager and then I started the Facebook page to, basically,
communicate with my clients in regards to vacancies that were
coming through," she said.
"(I did this) because a lot of them didn't have phone credit or
weren't able to contact me, but they normally were able to get
onto Facebook for free, so I thought that was kind of a good way
to communicate with them."
Miss Simmons has managed to find a range of different sources
to connect her followers to available jobs.
"I take photos of the vacancies in The Bunyip and the local
newspapers and the Playford Council already have a site called
North Adelaide Jobs, so there is an automatic feed in to the page
as well," she said.
"When I get a chance, I add job seekers and then I get employers
message me on the page, which is happening a lot more, which
Volunteering for the site is difficult at times, Miss Simmons
admitted, as she works two jobs herself.
However, seeing the positive results has encouraged her to
continue her volunteer work.
"When you get people who message and say, 'because of the
page, I've gained a job', it is really, really rewarding," she said.
Australia Day early-birds
ADELAIDE Plains Council is well
and truly first out of the blocks with its
Australia Day preparations, being the first
local council to announce the recipients of
its Australia Day Awards.
The awards recognise the Adelaide Plains'
Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the
Year, and Community Event of the Year, as
chosen by council.
The three award recipients were notified
of their success just before Christmas
-- five weeks before they will officially
be recognised at the local Australia Day
ceremony, to be held at Mallala Oval on
Thursday, January 26.
The ceremony will be held in conjunction
with the annual Australia Day breakfast,
which will be provided by Adelaide Plains
Council and prepared by the Mallala Lions
The breakfast is set to commence at 8am and
attendees are encouraged to bring along a
