$16 million expansion
The fourth-generation family-owned-and-operated
animal-feed manufacturer is upgrading its existing
Kapunda-based pellet factory, allowing it to double
its production capacity from 100,000 tonnes to
200,000 tonnes per year.
JT Johnson's general manager, Andrew Hayward,
said the additional production capacity will generate
an additional $20 million per year of revenue for
the local farmers, transport and communities that
support the company.
"The project will not only present opportunities
to current staff but also the local farmers, service
providers and truck drivers, because we will
purchase more raw materials in and be sending more
finished product out," he said.
"So the economic benefit for the local region will be
About 80 jobs are being supported through the
construction phase, which began just last week and
is expected to take under a year to complete.
The upgrade is being carried out by Ahrens
Group and Lynchborough-GPM and includes the
installation of another pellet press, new storage
facilities, and an additional out-loading silo,
together with a significant upgrade in pellet-making
The project will also result in improved feed safety
and staff welfare, as well as providing sustainability
benefits due to better energy-efficiency.
JT Johnson director Robbie Johnson said the new
facility is set to become one of the largest and most
efficient feed mills in Australia.
"Our customers will benefit from a state-of-the-art
production facility second to none in Australia,
which will produce pellets with superior product
quality and with a new level of efficiency within
the Australian animal pelleting feed industry," Mr
At a time when it is not uncommon to hear about
local businesses struggling, JT Johnson is bucking
the trend and reporting promising times ahead.
Mr Hayward said an upgrade has been in the
pipeline for at least 12 months, with demand for
product remaining strong.
It's as a result of our current production facility
reaching its capacity and the orders for the animal
feed that we are making are exceeding that
capacity," he said.
"We've been under the pump trying to keep up
with the orders and that's why we entered into this
project, to increase our production capacity, and,
hopefully, increase the sales."
Production and sales volumes are now around
300,000 metric tonnes of pellets, hay and straw per
year, for the domestic, Asian and Middle Eastern
The business is currently employing over 120 people
locally, along with having staff based at two stock
feed factories in Victoria.
A $16 million upgrade at Kapunda's JT Johnson & Sons is estimated to boost the local
economy by more than $20 million a year, as well as create and support local jobs across the
farming, manufacturing and transport industries.
