CONGRATULATIONS to Philip Kruger (owner)
and Shaun Laffin (trainer) of Big Merc which
convincingly won the 2014 GOTBA/GRSA Waterloo
Cup when he defeated the gallant Cool Frank.
Whilst the numbers were disappointing, the
quality of the field was not - with early favourite
Stew's Mistake going down to Big Merc in the third
round, patrons knew they were going to get a
good final course and they were not disappointed.
Ben Rawlings had an absolutely mind-boggling
day, leading in four winners with King Chaos
bringing him success in the derby when defeating
Ray Fewings' Raja's Green Man.
Again, the numbers were down but the quality
was there with some pretty handy performances
handed in by the younger brigade.
Rawlings' other winners were Man of Manners in
the GOTBA Maiden Stake, Lochinvar Impala in the
GOTBA Maiden Stake and Kalden Legenda in the
Waterloo Cup Consolation.
Ken Trowbridge also enjoyed his day's racing
when Footluce Diva defeated her litter sister
Footluce Dancer in the 2014 GOTBA/GRSA Oaks
-- again, disappointing numbers but a field full of
Our next and final meeting for 2014 is
scheduled for Sunday -- all grades catered for with
nominations closing with GRSA at 9am today.
This is your last opportunity for the 2014 season,
so come along and give your greyhound an
experience to remember.
GOLF: In a field of 25 players, Ed Manning played
as if he was inspired by his football club Port
Adelaide in last Thursday's stableford competition,
scoring a massive 45 points to win the day from
Noel Stringer who also had his best score for quite
a while with 43.
Third spot on the podium went to Deane
Branson on a countback from Errol Branson, both
with 40, while other prizewinners were George
Dahlitz, Warren Isgar (38) and Bob Charman (37)
on a countback from Max Grasby, Roger Hahn and
John Riley (37).
Others to make the better half were Barry
Schwartz, Brian Cooper (36), John Bell, Roen
Cameron (34) and Kieth Kluske (33).
Birdies for Barry Schwartz on the fourth and
14th, Bob Hillier on the first and John Bell on the
Nearest to the pins were Noel Stringer on the
ninth, Barry Schwartz on the fourth and Bob
Charman on the 12th.
Last Saturday, 11 players competed in a
stableford round with another 16 players
competing in the semi-finals of the club
The stableford winner was the big-hitting-but-
sometimes-wayward Colin Doudle with 41 points.
Colin actually scored on every hole and cannot
remember the last time that happened.
Max Grasby came in second with 39, while
Doug Cooper threw himself into the hands of the
handicapper to come third with 38.
There were no birdies and Barry Schwartz won
the only nearest to the pin on number four.
GOLF: The pairs ambrose competition week
turned out to be a great day for golf and a full field
was out to play.
The greens were running magnificently and
some fantastic scores were handed back into
the vice-captain (as the captain is away drinking
At the end of the field Troy Sires, Sal Hambour
and Wayne 'Kiwi' Strangward were landed with a
'threesome' and as it turned out that was the best
combination of the day.
Some other great 'family' combinations
combined better than maybe you would think
with Paul and Mick McCarthy and cousins John R.
and Joshua Mosey also posting very good sub-par
Also well in the mix until the last groups were
finished were Les Grafton and Stephen Waters.
Bert Pearce and Joe 'Catfish' Ryan played with the
McCarthys and it turned into a big-hitting 'slugfest'
as Mick and Bert continually tried to outdo each
other off the tee.
In the end, there was a bit of conjecture who had
actually won the money as the cards were checked
several times once the round was completed.
Anyway, a great day was had by all and golf was
the winner once again.
We also had a group of visitors from the Mount
Pleasant area (I think) playing in an 'Ashes' series
and I am pleased to say that the Aussies were
victorious once again.
Apparently, the 'Poms' haven't got their names
on the shield since the contest began.
It was mentioned on Saturday that all members
should log onto Golflink and register for the Lexus
It is free to enter and there are great prizes to be
won every time you play in your local comp.
In addition, the club with the most new 'sign
ups' is in the running to win $2500 for junior
So hop onto the computer and register to do
yourself and your club a favour.
This week we are back to a stroke round for the
Monthly Medal and after the round stick around
for some magnificent Joe and Kath Ryan lamb for
Should be a great feed. See you there.
FOOTBALL: Three sides represented the club in
the 2014 BLGFA first semi-final at Angaston.
In the main game, the A grade tore apart
Nuriootpa, eventually winning by 11 goals.
The win was the first A-grade finals victory for
many years and the boys appear to be hitting their
straps at the perfect time.
Whilst all 21 players contributed, most noticeable
was the defensive work of Aaron Bevis, and the
dominance of ruckman Chris James in the centre.
Dynamo Matt Foldesdy was superb, and by the
end of the match he was visibly exhausted due to
his huge work rate.
Home-grown talent Paul Marschall played one
of his best matches for the club and will have a lot
to say about the premiership aspirations of the A-
grade playing group in the coming weeks.
The boys will meet either Gawler Central or
Willaston in the preliminary final at Willaston on
The reserves played one of their worst matches
in years and succumbed to a determined Freeling
by two goals.
Best for the Lions included Tim Clift, Fraser
Moore, Jack Greatorex and BOG Damien Dalglish.
The senior colts came up against arch-rivals
Gawler Central in a rematch of last year's grand
After spending most of the last half multiple
goals in arrears, the boys came home with a flurry
and a Jayden Sheridan kick on goal ensured a one-
Best for the Lions included Ben Greatorex,
Lachlan Carter, Ben Matthews, Scott Blundell, Scott
Trenorden and BOG Darcy Judd-Smith.
The boys will play either Willaston or Barossa in
the preliminary final.
No South Gawler sides will be playing this
Saturday in the second semi-final.
INVITATIONAL NIGHT TENNIS: In a close call,
Nuriootpa held off a determined The Grove to win
3-2 in last Thursday's Playford Invitational Night
Tennis and remain in second spot on the ladder.
After losing the doubles, Nuriootpa fought back
through Dylan Sharman's two singles successes
and Nathan Pope's close 30-27 victory to secure
Playford fell nine points behind Nuriootpa after a
disappointing 5-0 loss to top team Mawson Lakes,
with Ben Toor losing his first and second singles
rubbers for the season, with only Mawson Lakes'
Stephen Drury yet to be beaten.
With a 5-0 loss to Elizabeth, Trinity is winless
and bottom of the table, although Saul Moore
and Adam Stone pushed their more experienced
opponents in several sets.
Games are played at the Bicentennial Courts,
Elizabeth Vale, 7pm on Thursdays.
THE club was well represented at Angaston with
five netball teams playing and the under 17
Over at the courts, the day started out with our
sub junior twos playing against Tanunda and
Playing next were our sub junior ones against
South Gawler, who, despite a fab effort by all girls,
did not win.
Senior sevens were next, coming up against
Willaston with the game going Willaston's way.
The senior one game against South Gawler was a
physical match with the Tiger gals putting in great
efforts, but not quite finishing it off.
In the senior three game, the girls started
strongly in a see-saw game, with the lead
changing to a margin of one to two goals for
either side for most of the last half.
Some positional changes in the last quarter saw
the Tiger gals gain the winning momentum.
On the oval, our under 17s came up against the
old foe South Gawler and what a game it turned
out to be.
Seventeen points up at three-quarter-time after
a powerful third quarter, the boys looked the
goods when they kicked the first goal in the last
The South Gawler lads had other ideas and
found another gear and finished over the top of
the Tigers to win by one point in a thriller.
We had good players all over the ground and
Lachlan Hill was our best with Beau Mason, Matt
Stewart, Nathan Cockburn, Paul Searle and Dylan
Pilkington all strong contributors on the day.
This Saturday we have the second semi-final at
Freeling, where the club will be represented by six
netball teams and three football sides.
Kingsford Hotel Club Person of the Week is Kim
Warland for her efforts as a club netball umpire
and as congratulations for recently receiving her
C-grade umpire's badge.
